Let’s face it…if you need the services of a Private Investigator, you probably are having a rough go of things. People don’t call the P.I. when all is well. As a professional Private Investigator, I totally understand that when my phone rings, chances are good; I am going to hear a sad tale of possible infidelity, or that someone stole your grandma’s priceless earrings or that your teen daughter has runaway. It’s just the nature of our business. With that in mind, what Private Investigators really do is solve problems. I’m often asked, at social get-togethers, what I do for work. I often respond that I solve problems. It piques curiosity and allows for an interesting conversation. It also avoids the stock answer of “I’m a P.I.” with the requisite response being…”Ooh, like Magnum, P.I.?”
While it is true that we do a fair amount of surveillance following spouses that are unhappy in their current relationships, that is only a one component of our workload. For that matter, many folks seem to have this idea that Private Investigative work is glamorous and exciting. Sometimes it is…but often it is tedious and mired in facts, figures and fraudulent financial spreadsheets. The reality is that Private Investigators are often the last line of defense for many people who feel as though life has dealt them a stomach punch.

Recently, a client called and requested surveillance for a spousal infidelity matter in Daytona Beach. While speaking with the individual, he stated that he had spoken to another private investigator that had “guaranteed” results. Basically, the other investigator advised the client that they would “nail her cheating”. I told the client he should be wary of any investigator that “promises results”.
When a client hires us to look into any matter, we expend time and resources trying to get to the bottom of the situation. We never know exactly what we will find or exactly how long it will take. Making a blanket statement at the outset that you can guarantee specific evidence will be produced is unprofessional and just plain wrong.
I’ll give you an example. Let’s say a person needs legal representation for a criminal charge. His attorney would never tell him, “I will guarantee you will be found not guilty.” The attorney does his best to effectively represent the individual and the person is paying for the attorney’s time and expertise.
Private investigative work is no different. Asking what we will find or how long it will take is like giving a person a gift and asking them how they like it before they are allowed to open it.
Be cautious when a Private investigator tells you exactly what you want to hear. Clients pay investigators to uncover the truth. We deal in facts and facts alone. A true professional private investigator will remain unbiased and impartial. That is what clients want when hiring a P.I.
Investigators who “take sides” or guarantee they will “catch them in the act” are doing their clients a great disservice. The reason why evidence uncovered by a professional investigator is valuable is because the investigator does not have a “dog in the fight”, so to speak. The real professional investigator only cares that the evidence is true, factual and was obtained legally. In court, an impartial and unbiased investigator is a much more credible witness than the one who promises results.
Additionally, you should expect to pay more for a better investigator. Again, the example of the attorney is appropriate here as well. We all hope we never need the services of a criminal defense attorney, but if we do…we want the best one we can afford. The same holds true for a private investigator. The average spousal infidelity investigation in Florida costs between $1,500 and $2,500. If you have an investigator tell you they can handle the whole thing for $800, that is a huge red flag. That investigator is either cutting corners (which can cost you dearly in the long run)…or he is under qualified to effectively conduct a professional investigation.
A professional private investigator will shoot straight with you and only promise to give their very best effort to uncover evidence and effectively bring the investigation to a successful conclusion.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We've all heard this sage advice, yet many people facing a divorce don't heed it. The "best defense is a good offense". That's an old adage as well. Many people that are going through a divorce, or about to, take a defensive posture that is hard to overcome once the divorce is in full swing. If you suspect your spouse may file for divorce, don't wait till it is too late to get the evidence you need. That evidence may be locating hidden bank accounts or getting tape of the other spouse having an affair. It is much harder to get these things once a divorce proceeding has begun as the other party is starting to circle the wagons.
I once heard the saying that "People get married for love and divorced for money". If that is the case, then start treating the divorce process as a business deal. It is very difficult to cut emotions out of situations like this, but those that are able to do so, are often in a better legal position during a divorce.
The best time to obtain the evidence needed to place yourself in an advantageous position during a divorce is before the other spouse suspects that a divorce will even take place. Avoid the urge to spill your guts and tell the cheating, lying spouse that you know all about the affair...or the hidden bank accounts. You have got to understand that protecting yourself is of the utmost priority.
Of course we are all human and a divorce is a very difficult process, but the people that are able to get past the hurt and start fighting for their rights are the people that often come out on top in a divorce proceeding. It does not matter what the other party threatens you with. What is important to remember is that the "he said, she said" banter often is not allowed in court. Cold Hard Facts are what matter. HOW TO SPOT A FAKE FACEBOOK USER

As Facebook recently prepared to sell company stock for the first time, it was required to make numerous legal disclosures in Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Buried in the fine print was a bombshell: The social network has an estimated 83 million fake user profiles. This equates to nearly 9% of the social network's 955 million total users.Facebook estimates roughly half of the fake users are duplicate accounts -- people who maintain more than one Facebook account. According to the company, the remaining fake users are believed to be spammers looking to commit "Like" fraud and companies who created profiles as people -- a violation of FB policy.So how does one spot a fake Facebook user? Barracuda, the anti-virus company, recently published a study that analyzed over 2,500 fake FB user accounts. Several red flags were found:

What information is available about you online? If you were applying for a job, could you be disqualified due to the content on your Facebook, Twitter or YouTube accounts. Believe it or not, it happens everyday. Recruiters routinely research a candidate's online presence. It appears that resumes are quickly being replaced by online profiles.
Many job seekers maintain numerous online profiles. Whether the candidate submitted a resume directly to an employer or the employer located the candidate's profile online, employers are continuing their research through the use of online information about the candidate.
In a 2009 CareerBuilder survey, it was reported that 45% of employers screen candidates via their Facebook and Twitter profiles. Additionally, 35% of employers disregarded a candidate based on information found on their Facebook page. A mere 18% of employers reported that they hired a candidate based on they way they presented themselves via their online presence.
The trend shows no signs of waning. Conversely, online profiles may replace resumes in the near future, altogether. Hiring managers and recuiters routinely use internet search engines to search for profiles you have on job boards, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube, as well as other social media websites. They look into groups you may be subscribed to on LinkedIn. If you list membership in certain groups or societies, they will search those sites for your blog posts and comments. Employers use online searches to verify the information you provided in your resume and to determine what type of person you are outside of the workplace.
An employer may be impressed with the fact that you maintained a 4.0 GPA in college but may disqualify you based on the photo of you on MySpace at a drunken party with pals. It is critical in today's job market to be aware of what information about you is online. Also, it is important to maximize that information and use it to effectively market yourself to potential employers.

We've all seen them. The ads that pop up on search pages touting that they can "find anyone" in just one click. For just $19.99 you can locate the long lost high school girlfriend or boyfriend, you can find out anything on anyone or you can run a nationwide criminal records search. Other ads claim that they can get all information on a person including addresses, vehicles, spouses, related persons and court records from $20 to $60. Can it be true? Can you really get all this great information for those prices? The short answer is NO.
What is important to understand is how public records and background information works. First, you have the source. Let us say the source is a local county clerk's office. Perhaps a record is generated at the clerk's office in March of 2011. The record is maintained at that office and entered electronically. It can take several months before that record is picked up by the database information brokers that re-sell it to the public. Then, it may be a year later before you conduct your search. By then, the record is well over a year old. What often happens is the information you are buying over the internet is dated and inaccurate. The old data entry adage of "junk in, junk out" applies here. Information is very often entered incorrectly. When you purchase the "online background check" there is no professional investigator on the other end of your request reviewing the information for you. There is only a computer database that spits out data. Much of that data is old and much of it contains data on unrelated persons.
If you search for John Q. Public, you may get results for that person and also John R. Public and John S. Public...you get the idea. Oftentimes, non-related persons' information is lumped in with the person you are searching for. Another thing to remember is that local, state and federal records are all maintained on different database sources. Half of the battle with a thorough background investigation is knowing where to search for the information. Professional private investigators know where the information is. Part of what you are paying for with a professional investigator is his/her skill and knowledge. Just like if you paid a dentist to pull a tooth or paid a plumber to fix your pipes. You want someone that knows how to properly do the job.
Another issue that comes up often is the concept of a "national criminal check". Folks, there simply is no such thing as a nationwide criminal history check. The closest thing to that is the NCIC database maintained by the federal government. The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) is the source used by law enforcement officials to check a person's criminal history and or if they have warrants. Even the NCIC database contains errors or is missing information and the NCIC database is for law enforcement agencies only. A private citizen, including private investigators, do not have access to that. The only way to properly do a criminal background check is to search state by state, county by county based on where the subject has lived in the past. Even then, you could miss an arrest if the person vacationed for a few days in some other area and was arrested. Professional private investigators have access to many private and proprietary database records that are not publicly available. Investigators must undergo rigorous vetting processes to have access. They know where to go for the information you need and also know how to decipher the difficult to read background data that these sources return.
It doesn't matter that you may think you are "good at finding stuff on the internet". A professional background investigation is not a "$20 online background check". I have clients call me all the time and tell me they paid $20 or $40 for an online background check that gave them no new information. Save your money and hire a professional investigator to provide you with accurate information.

In Florida, there are six types of alimony. They are Permanent, Rehabilitative, Durational, Bridge-The-Gap, Temporary and Lump Sum alimony. Specific information on Florida Alimony law can be found in Florida State Statutes Section 61.08. For our purposes we will generally refer to all as simply: Alimony.
